Voice Straws

Straw phonation is an exercise where we make sound through a straw. It is part of a series of SOVT exercises or Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract. This means: Semi-Unclosed Vocal Tract.

The different sizes of straws allow you to gradually increase the difficulty of the exercise.

The effect of straw phonation:

More pressure in the vocal tract

The mouth is only partially closed (around the straw) so that the pressure remains in the vocal tract. The vibration of the vocal folds will be easier. This reduces voice fatigue.

More balanced line of the vocal folds

If the mouth is open while speaking, breath flows from the lungs. This creates pressure against the vocal folds. The pressure returns to the vocal folds, giving them a more balanced upward position.

Reduction of the formants

Formants are resonances at a certain frequency. During strophonation, the vocal tract is twice as long, making the readings lower. This can help singers find the right timbre.
